Inside China and Hong Kong

As you prepare for your visit to our Asia-Pacific facilities, we would like to provide you with some information that you may find useful throughout your journey.

This region of the world is rich with culture, tradition, and truly unique customs. We hope that you are able to engage in, learn from, and enjoy this opportunity.

Local Customs

  • Tipping is generally not customary, although some westernized, expensive restaurants will automatically add a service charge, particularly in large cities like Hong Kong. Either way, don’t worry about leaving anything more than a dollar or two – if anything at all.
  • If someone has their arm extended, with their hand waving downward and their fingers waiving toward themselves, they are signaling for you to come toward them.
  • If someone serves you tea in a restaurant, it is polite to tap your pointer and middle fingers on the table to say, “thank you.”
  • In Hong Kong, cars drive on the left side of the road, and in China on the Right side. People tend to walk in these same directions.

Popular areas in Hong Kong

Lantau Island
Your plane will land here, and if you’re awake, it’s a pretty stunning view!

Lantau Island is also the location of the Tian Tan Buddha statue – the world’s largest outside, seated Buddha statue.

Kowloon
Your hotel will likely be located in Tsim Tsa Tsui. Tsim Tsa Tsui is very convenient for transportation between Hong Kong and China, having your visa retrieved, or even having a suit tailored. It is also the location of the Star Ferry, a beautiful boat trip to see Hong Kong by sea.

Hong Kong Island
Central/Lan Kwai Fong/Soho is the place to become part of the melting pot of the world. With restaurants, bars, the world’s longest elevator, this this is the must-visit place in Hong Kong.

Causeway Bay is quite literally what people think of when they think of Hong Kong. People swarm the streets like a mass of bees. It’s also home to just about any fashion store you can imagine.

Comparing the US to China

China may be on the other side of the world, but its climate is very similar to the United States. View a PDF.
